Our last breakfast at Mowani lodge, more bird pictures while waiting to leave. We were going on a long drive to the Khowarib Lodge. On the way we spotted some giraffe and elephant. Elephant tracks could easily be seen on the side of the road, let’s face it, it’s much easier to walk on the flat smooth road surface, than the rough rocky terrain. The elephants were a group of three young males, who had found some water beside the road and were giving themselves mud baths and showers.
We dropped the trailers beside the road, and went off road into the very dry and dusty bush for lunch. After lunch we continued driving through the dusty sand to a small quarry / valley where recently petroglyphs had been found. There was no guarantee we would find it, as Paul had never seen them, and only one of the guides had been there. We found them. It was a small valley, with lots of tumbled down rocks. There were engravings everywhere, the more adventurous finding them high up the cliffs. I am sure much more time will be spent photographing them in the future.
We went back to the trailers, which were being guarded for us, and then drove on to the lodge. The usual welcome drink, and wet towels were there to greet us. Wiping away the dust was a relief.
This lodge’s bedrooms were alongside a river bank, inhabited by baboons and cattle. This time the beds had mosquito nets. Our shower and toilet were fascinating, they were outside in the open air, but surrounded by a 8 foot high wall for privacy. The shower water was heated by a wood fire, and you could hear the man coming around very early in the morning lighting the fires for our morning showers.
Nice supper and beers before going to bed. Rosemary saw a shooting star on the way back.
