Swan Group Flower Festival 12th May – 13th May 2007
To celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Swan Group, a flower festival was held in each of the seven churches.
St Leonard’s Church, Grendon Underwood The nave dates from the 12th century. The tower has three bells and a Sanctus restored for the millennium.
St John the Baptist, Preston Bissett This church dates back to about 1310. The two bells dated 1728 & 1788 were cast in Bicester. Note the stained glass window which is not usually visible.
St Nicholas and St Mary’s Church, Chetwode A grade 1 listed early 13th century church with some amazingly beautiful early stained glass.
St Mary’s Church, Marsh Gibbon Another very old church, it was begun about 1240 with additions in the 14th century
St Michael & All Angels Church, A wonderfully peaceful church with unusual internal walls due to their lack of plaster. Note the display (last picture) which utilizes tiny stone steps leading to a narrow platform. The church also boasts a 15th century tower with three bells and a Sanctus.
St James’ Church, Barton Hartshorn Some features of this lovely church are said to be of 13th century origin. The two church bells are possibly 14th century.
St Mary’s Church, Twyford A 1320 tower with a clock and a peal of six bells, while the main structure is 14th & 15th century. A lovely Norman arch surrounds the main door.
