Our final morning was spent visiting the Africat Foundation Visitor Centre. First we visited a number of small enclosures where cheetahs were being kept prior to attempts to rehabilitate them into the wild. (There was also an extra secure compound where some lions were being kept. We had heard them, from the camp several miles away, roaring during the night.) Watching one small group of cheetahs it was slightly odd to hear a petrol motor start. Who on earth was doing what? “You can hear the male purring,” said our guide. Oh wow.
The Africat Foundation had a fully equipped veterinary surgery where cats could be brought in for repair. The visitor centre contained lots of pictures, and stories about the farm, how it changed from cattle breeding to rehabilitation of cats.
The afternoon was spent driving back to Windhoek, visiting a large gift shop and game head mounting store. Then on to the airport and flight back to Frankfurt. Slight delay on take off, the third suitcase of one passenger taken ill before takeoff was hard to find.
